Background
The New York State Department of Transportation tapped Dave Murphy & Associates for an engineered solar lighting solution that leverages the emerging solar market with a grid-electrified backup at the Long Island Welcome Center.
The LEED-certified building is a local landmark due to its architectural features and beach theme, located along the busy Long Island Expressway in Dix Hills, NY. Drivers can access the center from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., March-November. In addition to the indoor rest stop amenities for travelers, there is a playground, pet area, and an outdoor seating and picnic area.

The Challenges
Prestigious Solar Lighting Project with Unique and Complex Requirements
Given its high visibility as a regional gateway to the Hamptons and the amount of daily traffic it experiences, the requirements included:
- A high-efficiency solar lighting solution that meets specifications throughout the evening hours, accounting for long Northeastern winter nights
- Integrated backup grid power in the event of regional emergencies
- IoT integration with on-site cameras
- Robust poles to withstand high winds
- Products that adhere to the aesthetics of a highly visible landmark
The Solution
Robust Integrated Dual-Source Lighting and IoT Specifications for DOT Regional Gateway Welcome Center
DMA’s support and solution expertise met the demanding requirements by specifying LUMEC by Genlyte Solutions luminaire and SolarOne solar equipment and control support. The Long Island Welcome Center now has:
- Integrated solar and electrified grid for guaranteed all-night lighting
- A pole that was engineered and designed to meet the additional wind loads of a solar panel in the challenging wind environment
- Thoughtfully incorporated camera mounting for onsite monitoring to enhance motorist safety
The Result
An Elegant Solar Hybrid Pole
- Solar saves on annual energy and maintenance costs
- Meets targets for environmental sustainability
- Grid backup for power redundancy
- IoT cameras for onsite monitoring and security incorporated in design
- Thoughtful lighting design for all picnic, site, and parking areas
- Contemporary style elevates this architectural gateway to Long Island
